If I was a tree

if I was a tree is a heart touching poem by the famous Kannada poet Mudnakudu Chinnaswamy.

In this poem the poet expresses the agony,  the pain and plight of a particular community of India.

All through the poem the poet expresses his wish of being a tree. If he were a tree he would no longer be discriminated.

The bird would not ask for his caste, it would happily build its nest.

His shadow would not be considered defiled. He could enjoy all the aspects of Nature.

He could have the cow scrape its horns against the bark and feel the touch of the goddesses in it. It would thus be better being a tree as the God and Goddesses would come to it , in real life a low caste man was not allowed to enter a temple.

People would at least stop calling it names such as a dog eater. Thus it would be far better to be a tree.
