‘The Trees’ is a symbolic poem that focuses on the trees’ movement which is initially indoors, however, looking at escaping to freedom in the forest.

EXPLANATION:

The trees mentioned in the poem are decorative plants grown in homes in small pans and pots. They are not beneficial for insects and birds and birds cannot sit on their branches. Insects too cannot hide in those plants. These plants do not give any shade. The plight of the tree has been described by the poet as someone confined to the four walls of a room, here which is the greenhouses. Man has uprooted trees and preserved them in modern artificial glasshouses.

However, nature cannot be subdued for long. These trees struggle to break their artificial paddlers. Being in the artificial glass house the roots of these trees are trying to free themselves from the cracks of the porch floor, and the leaves, feeling suffocated in their small pans and pots as they are devoid of light, are making attempts to move towards the glass possibly searching for light.

The small branches of these trees have become stiff and hard due to overwork while trying to tug themselves towards the window for light. Long cramped boughs are attempting to shatter the roof and come to light similar to a newly discharged patient. The poet here is trying to convey that like humans trees too need freedom. They can get their natural growth and liberty only when they are in the forest and not in artificial green or glasshouses built by humans
