Nature in the poem "I Know why the Caged Bird Sing " is portrayed as a symbol of ups and downs in life. The freedom and the feeling of peace and content are all represented with the theme of nature. The free bird flies freely in both the breeze and the trade wind. The wind has been personified as the good and bad times in life. A free bird has the chance to experience everything in her life. A caged bird, on the other hand, never can feel these things in her life. As she is trapped in the cage she only has the permission to sing the songs of her oppression and longing for freedom.
