How does the poet of the poem the cold within uses the term winter as a metaphor?

Winter has been used as a metaphor in poem with as it shows the coldness in the heart of the people as they died not becoz of the coldness within but becoz of the coldness within.The coldness in the hearts of the people has been compared with the winter in this poem
