In India poverty is based on Poverty Line. The people who lie below poverty Lind are balled BPL ( Below Poverty Line ).

While determining the poverty line in India factors like minimum level of food requirement , clothing , footwear , fuel , light , education , physical health are considered.

The calorie needs vary with age, gender and type of work the person does. The accepted calorie requirement in India is - 2400 calories per person in rural areas  and 2100 calories per day in urban areas. The value of calorie required in rural area is more as the work done and physical activities are more there.

On the basis 2011 - 12 the poverty line for a person was fixed at Rs. 1000 for urban areas and rs. 816 for Rural areas. - (This data is refreshed frequently).
