• The extract is for the short story 'The Nightingale and the Rose' written by Oscar Wilde.
• The professor's daughter first agrees to the student's proposal of going to the Prince's ball with him only if he can bring her a red rose.
• Not being able to find one, the student becomes very depressed and lies down in his garden. The nightingale in the Oak tree sees him and decides to help him.
• The nightingale sacrifices it's own life to produce a bright crimson rose for the boy. The next day however, when the boy takes this rose to the professor's daughter she rejects him.
• She says that the chamberlain's nephew has given her jewelery and so she has decided to go to the ball with him.
