SSA or Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan is a programme by the Indian government that is aimed at making elementary education available to all the children "in a time-bound manner", which was made mandatory by the Indian Constitution, as per the 86th Amendment, according to which free and compulsory education shall be made a fundamental right for the children aged 6 - 14 years.
Many changes have been made to the approach of the SSA programme especially to its norms and strategies after the incorporation of the RTE Act. These changes include the vision of elementary education with an entirely new approach to the educational system and to its content, with reference to the curriculum, educational planning, teacher management and education, apart from offering equal opportunity to minority and disadvantaged classes in the society.
Programmes like NPEGEL and the Kasturba Gandhi Programme incorporate new educational operations, especially for girls and women.
