how does the query design tools give more control over the query wizard

This answer completely depends on whatever you know.
The query design tool has features which you can find out by exploring and digging in but the query wizard lacks this.
A practical go through would help you understand more.
I myself prefer query design over a wizard.
But, the wizard is easier to use and just serves the purpose, nothing extra.
