After rainfall the water droplets present in the atmosphere acts as a glass prism. The formation of rainbow consists of refraction, dispersion and total internal reflection phenomenons. When the white light of the sun falls on it, then the light gets refracted, dispersed and reflected internally into seven colours. Due to this the rainbow is formed always in the opposite direction of the sun.
Refraction specially helps in the dispersion of light into seven colours and forming a rainbow.
