How does the safety belt in the car helps when a moving car applies brake suddenly

When we apply the brakes of the car , due to the inertia of the motion of the body , we suddenly move in forward direction , this can hurt our body .

When we wear the belt , belt oppose the motion of the body and we remain safe .
