‘B. Wordsworth’ by V.S. Naipaul tells the story of narrator's relationship with a poet named B. Wordsworth when he (narrator) was a little boy. The story B. Wordsworth suffuses with escapist thoughts and behaviour. There is no element of hope, desire, or optimism to make a success of life by way of hard work. So, while reflecting on the story, the reader feels so underwhelmed and pensive.

Explanation:

  • The story highlights the plight of a ‘poet’ whom the child (the narrator) comes across. The 2 share an easy-going relationship and the narrator appears to instinctively understand and empathise with the ‘poet’.
  • The character Wordsworth  in this story no family, no roots, and  has no job. He lives in a tiny ramshackle house. He wanders around the place, tries to befriend people, intrudes into homes to find someone to talk to. He discovers the narrator, then a young naive school-going child. He tells the narrator a lie that he is a great poet and that William Wordsworth is his brother
  • Even after succeeding to build a bond with the narrator , B. Wordsworth finds no purpose in life, other than a fancy to climb to the zenith of glory by way of writing poems. His quest for fame and recognition brings him more  dismay,  more isolation and more escapist tendencies.
  • With the narrator by his side, Wordsworth wanders around, talking childishly. He writes poems, however, no one reads them except the narrator. This show the agony that B. Wordsworth must have endured. Finally, he dies, and departs from this world
  • At the end of the story, we can conclude that B.Wordsworth had been living inside an illusionary bubble that was created by him in hope to build an image of himself that is drastically different from the real him. However,  in his last moments he seemed to have accepted the reality by revealing that he was not famous.
  • B.Wordsworth’s character, although a bit peculiar, is relatable. There is a constant internal struggle within him. He seems to be fighting with his old true self to become something that he desires to be. This identity crisis has become rather common in today’s world.
