How does the size of atoms vary from left to right in a period, and on descending a group in the periodic table? what are the reasons for these changes?

in a period from left to right the atomic size increases and same happens when we go down the group
The reason for this is : as we go down the group or left to right in a period the no of electrons and successive shells start increasing so the atomic radius increases
