The sky appears dark to the astronaut because he directly views the space which is dark in reality.

In the daytime, we observe the space as blue because of the scattering of sunlight by the atmospheric layers.

The sunlight is white in colour, which is actually a spectrum of seven colours, out of which blue scatters the most due to its short wavelength.

Hence, we observe the sky which is actually the outer space as blue but because of the absence of atmosphere in outer space, the astronaut doesn't see any scattering of light and so the sky appears as dark.
