Ear has a canal and sound travels down it. Sound vibrations reach eardrum and Eardrum send vibrations to inner ear. From there , sound goes to Brain.

That's how we hear.

Sound needs a medium to travel

The vibration travels on to the air , where with rapid rarefactions and compression reach your ear , virbate your ear drum which is then amplified by the ear ossicles and picked up by the organ of Corti , which converted into electrical impulses which is carried by the auditory nerve to your brain which comprehends it . This takes 0.1 second.
