The vibrating object produces a series of compressions and rarefactions, one after the other in the medium. These pulses travel one behind the other as the sound waves move forward. When this sound wave reaches our ear, it forces the tympanic membrane to vibrate and thus causes the sensation of hearing.

The particles do not travel all the way from the vibrating object to the ear. A particle of the medium in contact with the vibration object is first replaced from its equilibrium position. It then exerts a force on the adjacent particles. As a result of which the adjacent particles gets displaced from its position. After displacing, the particles comes back to its original position. This process continues in the medium till the sound reaches our ear.
