When a body vibrates it displaces the particles next to it and causes them to vibrate. These particles then bump into the ones next to them and cause them to vibrate. The onset of this chain is like a cascade effect, the particles start bumping into the ones next to them and these vibrations eventually reach our ears. Our ears take in, magnify and send these vibration as signals to the brain through the auditory nerve enabling the brain to process, understand and recognise sounds.
