Sound in a medium travels in form of waves. Their speed differs in different medium. The sound wave particles collide with each other and push each other in the medium. Speed of sound depends directly on Density as when density increases speed of sound increases so what I mean to say is the speed of sound is highest in solid then in liquid and least in air.
Note:Sound cannot travel in vaccum it requires a medium for its propogation.
