He took the wheel and fought water that was getting into the ship. This shows, they were not willing to give in to danger but were ready to battle it. They faced the extremely cold night, struggling to pump out water, find direction and also work the radio. With no response to their desperate calls for help because they were in a distant corner of the world, they were still optimistic about finding Ile Amsterdam and steered the ship towards the direction.
