Once the life source of a tree is uprooted and exposed to sun, it withers and all life is sucked out of it. Slowly the sap in the root of the tree dies leaving it hardened and shrivelled. Slowly, it turns brown. With time, it become dry and bent out of shape.

Left to themselves, they will never kill a tree. But if the roots are exposed and kept in the sun and air, the tree will wither away and die.
