How does the temperature of the earth's surface affect the temperature of the air above it?

Air temperature rises and falls, approaching the temperature of the surface beneath it. If the surface is cold, the warm air above it will transfer its heat to the cold surface. Thus, the air cools and the surface warms up. If the surface is warm, the heat energy from the surface will transfer to the air.
