How does the temperature vary with altitude

The higher you go, the less atmospheric pressure there is to push down on you, or anything for that matter, So, since there is less air the pressure decreases. As the pressure decreases, air molecules spread out further (air expands) and the temperature decreases.

If you were to burrow into the earth, the temperature would increase because the pressure would have increased.
This is why, in the Winter, small animals burrow underground to hibernate or stay warm. It is warmer underground.

As the altitude increases the no. Of air molecules decreases thus the average kinitic energy decreases. The result is   A decrease in air temperature with increase of altiude  i. e Temperature is inversely proportional to altitude
