in group decreases from left to right
in period increase

In a group of the modern periodic table the tendency to lose electron when we go from top to down as the number if shell increases.thus it is more capable of loosing electrons where as in a period if we go from left to right the nuclear charge increases thus leading to a strong connection of electrons to nucleus thus the tendency to lose electron decreases as you go from left to right in a period
