Longitude is the east/west measurement (or location) of a place. The Earth's counter-clockwise spin (looking down on the North Pole) causes locations to the east of a place to start a day sooner (the sun rises earlier than the place) while locations to the west of the place start their day later - so time to the east is later and time to the west is earlier.
