The poet was fifty-one years old when he wrote the poem ‘The Wild Swans at Coole’. In the poem, he sees himself pass through the beautiful, energetic, younger years, symbolised by the autumn season into the ‘twilight’ when life slows down and gradually shows the way to death’s door.

The swans that he sees in his younger years and the ones he sees in his later years, retain their beauty. It symbolises the beauty of nature which remains unchanged. It is only the human life that undergoes transformation.

The poem is written by Irish poet, William Butler Yeats (1865 – 1939).
