How does the use of fertilizers improve crop production?

I believe it's because of the added nitrogen to the fertilizer but I may be errored about the Nitrogen being added.

Explanation: My chemistry teacher said there are 3 types of fertilizers.

I think he said 2 have Nitrogen added and 1 is a natural fertilizer but for the natural fertilizer I do not know the ingredients for certain correctness.
