how does the uterus prepare itself and nurture the growing embryo?what happens when the egg is not fertilized?

When the egg is fertilized, the Corpus Luteum secretes female sex hormone Progesterone which prevents shedding of uterine wall, thus stopping menstruation temporarily. The embryo gets implanted in the uterus and get nourishment from here.

If the egg is not fertilized, the inner lining of uterus is shed and this bleeding is called as mensuration.
