All living organism reproduce. The offspring produced differ from parents. They inherit traits from parents as well as they develop new variations also. Variation can be defined as the changes in the genetic material or in the alleles of the genes of a population. In case of asexual reproduction only mutation can bring changes with compare to sexual reproduction where variations come from mixing of genetic material of parents also contributes in variation.. If the variations are useful in survival and reproduction they pass on to next generation resulting in more population having these variations.
These variations accumulate and show changes in the population..Variations which are beneficial for the population and help in the better survival of the population are naturally selected. Accumulation of many such variations results in development of new species. Therefore, variation is the cause for evolution.
