The real version of Rapunzel is different from the one's that we get to see nowadays for example tangled. In the real fairy-tale version the mother was pregnant when she demanded for a plant to eat named Rapunzel from a witch's garden. However her husband got caught and the witch let him live only on the condition that they would give her their first born child to which they agreed.

The witch locks Rapunzel in a tower. One day a prince hears her sing and fall sin love with her. She is kept locked up and only way of reaching her are her long hair through which the witch climbs up the tower. The prince frees her and locks the witch in the tower.

In the new versions like tangled the girl is of noble birth and she falls in love with a thief. Her hair has healing magic due to which the witch keeps her locked up. She goes with the thief to explore the land and falls in love with him eventually. When the witch tries to take her away Rapunzel then cuts off her hair due to which the magic in the hair disappears.
