The food that we eat is decomposed by the bacterias inur mouth to produce acid. This acid as a pH lower than 5.5 and thus, is responsible for decay of tooth.

But, if we use Toothpaste, which is a mild base, it neutralises the acids produced or even prevent the production of acids.

This is how, toothpaste helps in prevention of tooth decay.
