Transpiration is a process by which water is transported from the roots to the leaves from where is released out into the atmosphere.

Water molecules are polar that is they are charged and tend to bind to each other and against the xylem vessels through which they are transported upwards in the plants.

This is a property known as adhesion. Hence, as the water evaporates from the leaf surface it creates a tension and as upward force or pull that enables water to travel upwards in the plants.
