Explanation:
Refusing to believe this, Voldemort casts the Killing Curse with the Elder Wand while Harry uses a Disarming Charm with Draco's, but the Elder Wand refuses to kill its master and the spell rebounds on Voldemort who, with all of his Horcruxes destroyed, finally dies.
If you’ve seen the movies, you might know that Voldemort disintegrated following a nonsensical lonely battle in the courtyard of Hogwarts, following a needless fall and poking each others eyes and noses. Though the effect was same and it did seem to be a visual spectacle at the end, the ending didn’t seem to do any justice to the books, which I believe handled the scene much more gracefully (Kudos to Rowling for that).
The book did this scene in a western style. Both belligerents circling each other like a pair of hungry wolves, with the entire then present Hogwarts populace witnessing the event. Please note that I will just graze over the entire battle as I do not want to rob you off the pleasure of reading and enjoying the books. The scene goes like this:
In the final showdown, the inner circle had two battles being fought simultaneously. One was fought between Voldemort and Minerva McGonnagal, Horace Slughorn and Kingsley Shacklebolt and the other was fought between Bellatrix Lestrange and Hermione, Luna and Ginny. While they fought, Harry was under the invisibility cloak, confused whether to attack his enemies or protect his dear ones. Evidently enough, the girls were no match for Bellatrix and hence retreated when Molly Weasley went against Bellatrix. After a series of taunting by Bellatrix regarding Fred’s death, an eraged Molly killed Bellatrix. This led to Voldemort knocking his opponents off their feet as he went to take Molly for himself. At this moment, Harry cast a shielding charm between Molly and Voldemort, thereby revealing himself. His revelation was welcomed by a huge round of applause and cheer.
The inner circle cleared and there were only Voldemort and Harry circling each other, looking at each other with hungry eyes. At this moment, Harry told him that all the horcruxes were gone and it was just the both of them now. Harry also told him the reason why the Elder wand didn’t work for him as its true loyalty lied with him. Enraged by this, Voldemort let out his final Avada Kedavra curse, which rebounded due to the fact that the wand cannot kill its owner. With that, Voldemort fell flat on the ground like a normal human being.
It is kind of a poetic justice in the way he died. A great wizard who had cheated death for years and reached to the closest thing to immortality died in such an unceremonious manner. It really goes forward to tell that no matter how great you are, good or evil, your death will be simple and will be the same as any other human being.
