Explanation:
The human body responds to fear because it’s how people survive. Without the body’s fight or flight response, a defense mechanism, humans would not be able to withstand the threat they faced. In The Castle of Otranto, the first gothic novel, the writer Horace Walpole used gothic elements to help trigger fear to whomever was reading. Three of the gothic elements Walpole used were omens, portraits, visions, an ancient prophecy, and women threatened by a powerful, impulsive, tyrannical male. Fear is one of the main reasons people are alive today. When threatened, the human body slows or shuts down functions that are unnecessary to our survival. The amygdala, the part of the brain that is the fear center, helps sharpen senses and pumps blood faster. Fear can also have negative impacts such as: physical health, memory, brain processing and reactivity, and mental health. “Fear is a human emotion that is triggered by a perceived threat. It is a basic survival mechanism that signals our bodies to respond to danger with a fight or flight response. As such, it is an essential part of keeping us safe”(Impact of fear and anxiety) Gothic elements are what gives a story its gothic element. There are nine gothic elements but one of the main elements is: setting in a castle and Walpole bases the story in a castle. Walpole sets his novel in a castle because it is big and gloomy.
