Desert have sand in them. As you know, sand is very light and easily blown away by wind. If there was a relatively strong wind in a particular region (maybe even a sandstorm) the sand would get blown about and it would completely change the landscaping, forming new hills, and making older hills vanish or decrease in size.

Explanation: since sand is light when the wind blows there’s a chance that the sand will go with it. Basically erosion. When the sand is whisked away it forms hills, miniature mountains etc. when there’s a stronger wind a sandstorm can be created.
