Answer:

Known as the eclipse of the sun it takes place when the moon comes in between the earth and the sun. As a result, the moon blocks the light of the sun from reaching the earth and casts a shadow on the sun. This occurs in the new moon phase. We observe up to five solar eclipses in a year.
