You may not be 18 years of age. But most of you have participated in an election of some sort or the other. Haven’t you? You said ‘aye’ or ‘nay’ when your teacher called out the names of the contenders standing for class representative or you ‘cast your vote’ in a ballot box in the election to choose your school pupil leader. By doing so, you not only elected a leader but also a representative from among your group (students’ group), who works for the cause of the voters and speaks for them.

The school is a smaller entity. Now, take the country, a much larger institution. How are its leaders elected? India has a federal government with three layers of governance.
