Electrolytes are composed of free moving Charged Particles, i.e. ions. When a pd is applied across the electrolytes, the +ve ions move towards the -ve terminal and gain electrons to become neutral atoms, the opposite happens with the -ve atoms. Electrolytes' lose their conductivity over time since they liberate some of the constituents of the electrolyte as gases or metals who settle at the bottom.

Hope It Helps.
