The upper part of cloud have positive charge and lower part is negatively charged. Earth is also positively charged. The different charges attract each othe and then crash with each other to produce great sound and voice called thunder. This thunder strikes on earth surface as lightening.

The energy formed by evaporated water is Hydopower and can produce electricity.Heavier, negatively charged particles sink to the bottom of the cloud. When the positive and negative charges grow large enough, a giant spark - lightning - occurs between the two charges within the cloud. This is like a static electricity  sparks you see, but much bigger.
