In 1897, J.J. Thomson discovered the electron by experimenting with a Crookes, or cathode ray, tube. He demonstrated that cathode rays were negatively charged.
Given the discoveries of electrons in 1897 by Thomson, Rutherford and other scientists decided that a positively charged particle must exist to center the electron to create equally neutral atoms. Thompson proposed the name'positive rays'.

Electron means positive rays. n 1891 Johnstone Stoney proposed to name it "electron." When J.J. Thomson discovered the light particle which carried that charge, the name "electron" was applied to it
