- It contains large amount of RNA and phospholipids.
- High rate of protein synthesis is seen here and also involved in the synthesis of triglycerides and steroids Which means ER is mostly engaged in protein synthesis and metabolic processes like glycogen and lipid metabolism.
And ER WAS firstly described as filamentous structures by Garnier which is involved in mechanical support.. So by all the characteristics of ER we can conclude that it provides machnical support to cytoplasm
