Mitochondria are sites of cellular respiration. They use molecular oxygen from air to oxidise the carbohydrates and fats present in the cells to carbon dioxide and water vapour. Oxidation releases energy, which is used to form ATP. This is the reason why it is called the power house of the cell.
ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate) is called the energy currency of the cell or the energy carrier. It acts like a fuel, which is used to carry out various processes of the cell.
