For a reaction to proceed, the reactant particles must cross a threshold energy barrier called activation energy.

All catalysts, including enzymes which are biological catalysts, form a transition state with the reactants, of lower free power than would be found in the uncatalyzed reaction.

Thus even usually modest reductions in this potential energy barrier produce significant increases in the rate of reaction.

If enzymes were absent, it would take us a very long time to digest our food.
