Answer:

Ethanol,C2H5OH, is an alcohol which reacts with sodium metal to yield sodium ethoxide,C2H5ONa, and a colorless gas which burns with a pop sound. Ethanol also reacts with iodine gas, I2 to form tri-iodo-methane commonly known as iodoform....

Ethanol forms acetaldehyde on oxidation, so it gives the iodoform test. The formation of a pale yellow precipitate when iodine in sodium hydroxide reacts with alcohol that can be oxidized to acetaldehyde is the iodoform reaction. The acetaldehyde is then treated with I2 and NaOH it gives sodium formate and iodoform.
