How far do you agree with the view that the peace treaty of versailles was harsh and humiliating for germany which led to the rise of nazism in germany?
Answers
The peace treaty at Versailles with the Allies was a harsh and humiliating one. Germany lost its overseas colonies, a tenth of its population, 13 per cent of its territories, 75 per cent of its iron and 26 per cent of its coal to France, Poland, Denmark and Lithuania. The Allied powers demilitarised Germany to weaken its powers. The War Guilt Clause held Germany responsible for the war and damages the Allied countries suffered. Germany was forced to pay compensation amounting to about 6 billion pounds. The Allied army also occupied the resource-rich Rhineland for much of the 1920s. Many Germans held the new Weimar Republic responsible for not only the defeat in the war but the disgrace at Versailles.

It has to be conceded that the Treaty of Versailles signed by the major nations of the world, particularly, the US, the UK, France and Italy was very severe on Germany. Besides imposing a heavy penalty of close to five million pounds (reduced from a higher figure imposed earlier), there were conditions spelt-out, limiting the military strength Germany can possess. Some of these included not having more than 100,000 hands in the military and number of warships the country was allowed to have. The Treaty even prohibited Germany from producing tanks and military aircraft. More humiliation was heaped through some territories being taken away from Germany.
All these meant Germany stood isolated in the comity of nations and the sentiments of the average German could be fully exploited by the Nazis to their advantage.
