The title of the poem 'The Professor' is actually very ironical. On reading the title, one will think that some knowledgeable, inspiring thoughts and actions of a reputed professor will be mentioned. However, we only find a professor of geography boasting in poor English about his sons well settled, daughters married, wife dead and whatnot. Underneath all his hollow pride, we can sense the gloom of the professor who has nothing to do, is usually indoor and probably shunned by everyone. Thus, the poem's title is mocking in its tone.
