Muhammad Shah was placed on the throne by the Saiyid brothers when he was 17 years old. He was a pleasure loving person and ruled as a puppet for a few years. Then he tried to get rid of them. In 1722 with the help of the nobles headed by Chin Kilich Khan or Nizam-ul-Mulk he was able to remove them.

Muhammad Shah did not take any steps to strengthen the empire. He was fickle minded and suspected his own ministers. Nizam-ul-Mulk became his wazir in 1722. But when his attempts to reform the administration were not supported by the Emperor he left the court in 1724 and set up an independent kingdom with Hyderabad as his capital. Independent kingdoms were set up by Sa'adat Khan and Alivardi Khan who were the governors of Oudh and Bengal respectively. In this way the Mughal Empire started disintegrating under his rule.
