Fasting in the month of Ramadan keeps the community together in number of ways, some of which are as follows.
- Empathy: Fasting invokes a feeling of empathy among the members of the community towards the poor as they feel the hunger the have nots of the society feel almost on a daily basis.
- Brotherhood: When the whole community takes part in fasting and the activities that surround it, e.g. Congregational Tarawih prayers, sahur, and iftar, a sense of brotherhood, unity and harmony prevails.
- Piety: Fasting is not just about staying away from food, it is a training to stay away from all kinds of evil and to do all deeds that are good. It, thus, encourages a pious society on the whole.
- Toughness: Fasting also increases the toughness of the community as a whole, as staying hungry all day for the whole month trains the mind and the body to bear hardships.
