Flag is used to promote the feeling of nationalism amongst indians as the first flag was designed during swadeshi movement which was tricolored and had 8 lotuses and a crescent moon. FUrther another flag was designed by Gandhiji which was also tricolored but had a spinning wheel in the centre, symbolizing self help. The flag gave the nation its own identity and it was widely used in processions. Hence, it became a symbol of defiance.
The nationalists believed that the British had destroyed their culture and thought the only way to realise the glory of the country was to revive the folklore of India. So, nationalists like Rabrindrath Tagore and Natesar Shastri travelled all through India and gathered folk tales that glorified Indian history.
