When we swallow food, the epiglottis flattens and blocks the passage to the wind pipe...so the only path avialable to the swallowed food is the food pipe or oesophagus

During swallowing of food the epiglottis flattens and blocks the passage to the windpipe. The only parts available to the food is the the food pipe or esophagus.

Hence the food reaches to food Pipe and not in wind pipe.
