Answer:

Aurangzeb's religious policy was largely responsible for the downfall of the Mughal Empire. His policy of religious persecution of the Hindus, who formed the bulk of the population of the country, hastened the fall of his dynasty. Moreover, Aurangzeb turned against the Shias with as much bitterness as the Hindus.

There were many reasons due to which Aurangzeb is responsible for the decline of Mughal empire :-

1.  As Aurangzeb was unable to subdue Shivaji and his successors, it resulted in an independent Maratha state .

2.  His prolonged absence from northern India weakened the administration and depleted the treasury.

3.   As a ruler, Aurangzeb did not have a broader vision towards religion. His policies were to a large extent responsible for the decline of Mughal empire.

4.  His reintroduction of Jaziya made him unpopular and another reason of his unpopularity was his intolerance.
