Man made disturbances like land development is a leading cause when people Are involved.
Catastrophic fire is another.
Insect infestations like bark beetles are very devastating as well as fungal diseases, root rot and simple physical damage to the tree(s).
On a larger scale, massive clear cutting without post cutting treatment is responsible for the major disappearance of trees. That and large scale, extremely hot wildfires. Hot wildfires destroy soils and precious microbes.
